Coalesce – 0:12 Revolution in Just Listening

Coalesce is the band that put physics back in hardcore. These Midwest legends led the mathcore pack back in the 90s and their Relapse debut 0:12 Revolution in Just Listening was ahead of its time. Much like Burnt by the Sun, Coalesce was in the curious position of being too popular for the DIY circuit to handle. This, of course, brought the big metal labels sniffing around. After an ill-fated tenure with Earache, Coalesce settled on Relapse as their “big” label.

Success didn’t change this band. Like all of their other material, Coalesce stayed in Kansas and recorded 0:12 Revolution in Just Listening with long-time engineer Ed Rose. Many hardcore bands have deconstructed rock music but Coalesce deconstructed the song itself. Success still hasn’t changed this band. The new album Ox will be out shortly and maybe, just maybe, there won’t be another 10-year-long gap between LPs next time.
