Under the Running Boards is not only the Dillinger Escape Plan’s Relapse debut, it is three of the best songs the band ever wrote. Plus, this is the Calculating Infinity line-up with Dimitri Minakakis and Adam Doll. Does anything else really need to be said? Yes, one more thing does need to be said. If you ever get the chance to watch the 2003 Hellfest DVD, DEP gives a killer performance of “The Mullet Burden”, which is from this EP. Highly recommended.

Another DEP album means another line-up change. This time, it’s Gil Sharone of Stolen Babies behind the drums instead of Chris Pennie, who split for Coheed & Cambria (why?!?). Ire Works is another awesome Dillinger record but, no, it doesn’t sound like Calculating Infinity. There won’t be another Calculating Infinity. Can we all get on with life? Okay?

Onto the new record, Ire Works, which is another step in the continuing evolution of this band. They’re still playing wacky math-metal, but now with a Spiritualized vibe. They’re still flirting with electronic elements. “Milk Lizard” and “Black Bubblegum”,The two singles, are accessible yet they’re not radio-friendly. These songs would sound the same even if this was still a 7” band in a New Jersey basement. That’s who you’re dealing with here. Recommended.
